Will MS Dhoni Play IPL 2025?
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may retain their legendary player, MS Dhoni, for another season as the BCCI has brought back the ‘Uncapped Player’ rule. However, Dhoni has not yet confirmed if he will play in the upcoming IPL season.
According to some reports, MS Dhoni’s decision will be made after he meets with the team officials later this month. There have been concerns about whether he will continue playing in the IPL, but Dhoni said his decision will depend on the retention rules set by the IPL council.
“There is still a lot of time. We need to see what decisions they make about player retention. Right now, it’s not in our hands. Once the rules and regulations are set, I will decide what’s best for the team,” Dhoni shared.

The BCCI has reintroduced the ‘uncapped player’ rule, which was removed in 2021. This rule applies only to Indian players. According to this rule, a capped Indian player becomes uncapped if they have not played in the starting XI in any international match (Test, ODI, or T20I) or do not have a Central Contract with the BCCI for the last five years before the season.
Since MS Dhoni retired in 2019, he qualifies under this rule to play in the IPL. If he chooses to play, Dhoni can be retained by the Chennai Super Kings for a price of INR 4 crore.
IS The Uncapped Player Rule in IPL 2024 Auction Only For MS Dhoni?
The new ‘uncapped players’ rule has put a spotlight on MS Dhoni’s situation. If the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) decide to keep him, they can retain him for as low as INR 4 crore. Despite his uncapped status, Dhoni’s smart strategies and popularity make him a key player for the team, and they would likely choose him at any cost.
This rule, however, isn’t just for Dhoni. It applies to all players who have retired from international cricket but are still fit and performing well in the IPL. Players like Piyush Chawla and Amit Mishra, who haven’t played for India in years, are still shining in the IPL.
The uncapped players rule shows that the BCCI values players who stay committed and fit for the game, even after retiring from international matches. This change highlights the importance of experience, fitness, and smart gameplay.
