The Indian Premier League (IPL) started in 2008, and since then, it has become the biggest and most popular cricket tournament in the world. With each season, it has grown larger, attracting top cricket players from all over the globe, making it one of the most competitive tournaments around.

Over the years, a few players have stood out, performing consistently and making their mark in IPL history. This article highlights some of those standout performers. We will look at the top ten run-scorers in IPL history. Since the tournament began, only seven players have managed to score 5,000 or more runs.

Most Runs in IPL

Virat Kohli IPL Runs

There is only one player in the history of the IPL who has scored over 8,000 runs, and that is none other than Virat Kohli, considered one of the greatest modern-day batters. Kohli has been loyal to one team, Royal Challengers Bangalore, playing in every IPL season for them.

So far, he has appeared in 252 matches, scoring a total of 8,004 runs with an average of 38.66 and a strike rate of 131.97. Kohli also holds the record for the most centuries in the IPL, with eight to his name. In addition, he has scored 55 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 113 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan IPL Runs

Shikhar Dhawan, a name often overlooked in IPL conversations, has been a consistent and reliable performer over the years. The experienced opener has represented five different teams in his IPL journey, including Delhi Capitals, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In 2016, Dhawan was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad that lifted the IPL trophy, marking a high point in his career. Over the years, he has also captained Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, showing his leadership qualities.

With 6769 runs in 221 innings, Dhawan has an impressive average of 35.25 and a strike rate of 127.14. His consistency shines through, with two centuries and 51 half-centuries to his name, his highest score being 106* not out.

Rohit Sharma IPL Runs

Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful players in IPL history. He has won the most IPL titles, leading the Mumbai Indians to victory five times. Before joining the Mumbai Indians, Rohit played for the Deccan Chargers from 2008 to 2010. Since then, he has been a key player for Mumbai Indians.

Rohit has played a total of 257 IPL matches, where he scored 6628 runs. His average score is 29.72, and he has a strike rate of 131.14, which means he scores quickly. His highest score in a match is 109 not out. Rohit has also achieved two centuries and 43 half-centuries in his IPL career.

David Warner IPL Runs

David Warner, the former Australian opener, is known as a run-scoring machine in the IPL. He holds the record for the most runs by an overseas player. Warner is also the only player to win the Orange Cap, awarded to the highest run-scorer in a season, three times (2015, 2017, and 2019).

Warner made his IPL debut in 2009 and has played for Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. In his 184 innings, he has scored 6565 runs at an impressive average of 40.52 and a quick strike rate of 139.77. Warner has the most half-centuries in the IPL (62) and has also scored four centuries, with his highest score being 126.

Suresh Raina IPL Runs

Suresh Raina, known as “Mr. IPL,” had an amazing IPL career. He was a key player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and also played for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 when CSK was suspended.

Until the 2021 season, Raina played 205 matches and scored 5528 runs. His average was 32.50, and he had a strike rate of 136.73, showing how fast he could score. Raina hit one century and 39 half-centuries during his career, with his highest score being 100 not out.

MS Dhoni IPL Runs

MS Dhoni, the legendary Indian captain, is the most successful captain in IPL history. He has led his team to win five IPL titles and two Champions League titles. But Dhoni isn’t just known for his captaincy; he is also a great batter.

Dhoni usually bats in the middle and lower order, playing important roles in many matches. He has played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rising Pune Supergiant and holds the record for playing the most matches in the IPL, with 264 games.

In his IPL career, Dhoni has scored 5243 runs at an average of 39.12 and a strike rate of 137.53. He has hit 24 half-centuries, with his highest score being 84 not out.

AB de Villiers IPL Runs

Former South African cricket star AB de Villiers had a remarkable IPL career. He played for Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) between 2008 and 2021, spending most of his time with RCB.

In his IPL journey, de Villiers played 184 matches and scored 5162 runs in 170 innings. He had an impressive average of 39.70 and a fast strike rate of 151.68. He also hit three centuries and 40 half-centuries, with his highest score being 133 not out.

Chris Gayle IPL Runs

Veteran West Indian opener Chris Gayle is known as the best T20 batter of all time. He holds the record for the most runs in T20 cricket, including both international and domestic matches. Gayle played in the IPL from 2009 to 2021 for three teams: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

In his IPL career, Gayle played 142 matches and scored a total of 4965 runs. He had an average of 39.72 and a strike rate of 148.96, showing how quickly he could score. Gayle smashed six centuries and 31 half-centuries, with his highest score being an incredible 175 not out.

Gayle also holds some amazing records in the IPL, including the most sixes, the fastest century (in just 30 balls), and the highest individual score in the tournament. His powerful hitting made him one of the most feared batters in the league.

Robin Uthappa IPL Runs

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, who was a star in the 2007 T20 World Cup, had a long and successful IPL career. He played in 15 seasons of the IPL and retired after the 2022 edition.

Throughout his career, Uthappa played for six different teams: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Pune Warriors India (PWI), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

In his IPL journey, Uthappa played 205 matches and batted in different positions, succeeding in many of them. He scored a total of 4952 runs with an average of 27.51 and a strike rate of 130.35. Uthappa also hit 27 half-centuries, with his highest score being 88.

Dinesh Karthik IPL Runs

Former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik had a long and successful IPL career, playing in all 17 seasons until his retirement after the IPL 2024. Karthik played for six different teams during his journey, including Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Lions (GL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Mumbai Indians (MI), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Throughout his career, Karthik played 257 matches and scored 4842 runs in 234 innings. His average was 26.31, and he had a strike rate of 135.36, showing his ability to score quickly. He also hit 22 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 97.
