Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

The Narendra Modi Stadium, located on the banks of the Sabarmati River on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, was previously known as the Sardar Patel Stadium. Built on 50 acres of land donated by the Gujarat government, this impressive stadium was constructed in just nine months.

It is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association. Before this stadium was built, international cricket matches in Ahmedabad were played at the Municipal Corporation Stadium, which could accommodate 49,000 fans.

Narendra Modi Stadium History

The Narendra Modi Stadium hosted its first international Test match on November 12, 1983, between India and the West Indies. In 2006, the stadium underwent renovations ahead of the Champions Trophy.

The stadium, also known as Motera Stadium, has witnessed many historic cricket moments. Sunil Gavaskar became the first cricketer to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket here, and Kapil Dev claimed his 432nd Test wicket, surpassing Sir Richard Hadlee’s record.

During the 2011 ICC World Cup, India defeated Australia in the quarter-finals at this venue. Two years later, Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to score 30,000 runs in international cricket at this stadium.

Motera Stadium was a regular venue for Test and limited-overs cricket until 2015, when the Gujarat Cricket Association decided to reconstruct it to make it the largest cricket stadium in the world. The reconstruction, which cost an estimated 8 billion, was completed in five years.

The stadium now accommodates 130,000 fans, surpassing the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s capacity of 90,000. Spanning 63 acres, it features four entry points, a field size of 180 yards by 150 yards, four dressing rooms, six indoor practice pitches, state-of-the-art floodlights, and covered stands. The design ensures a 360-degree unobstructed view of the field for all spectators, enhancing the viewing experience.

Originally, the pitch was bowler-friendly but became slower over the years. In 2021, during the India vs England Test series, the pitch was criticized after the third Test ended in just two days with England suffering a heavy defeat. The ICC reviewed the pitch and rated it as ‘average.’

In February 2021, the stadium was renamed the ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’ in honor of India’s current prime minister. That year, it hosted its first pink-ball Test match between India and England.

MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, located in Chennai, is a beloved cricket venue in India. Originally called the Madras Cricket Club, it was renamed in honor of M.A. Chidambaram, a former President of the BCCI. This stadium hosts the Tamil Nadu cricket team for domestic matches and the Chennai franchise in the Indian T20 league, as well as international games featuring the national team.

MA Chidambaram Stadium History

The stadium’s rich history began in 1934 when it hosted its first Test match between India and England. Notably, in 1952, it was the site of India’s first Test victory, also against England. The stadium was the venue for the inaugural Ranji Trophy match in 1936 between Madras and Mysore.

One of the most memorable events here was the tied Test match between India and Australia in 1986, which included Dean Jones’ remarkable 210-run innings. Additionally, Narendra Hirwani made history at this ground with a record-breaking debut bowling performance, taking 16 wickets for 136 runs.

Fans at the Chepauk, as it’s commonly known, are renowned for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship. In 1997, they gave a standing ovation to Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar for scoring a then-record 194 runs in an ODI.

In 2016, Karun Nair became the second Indian to score a triple century in a Test match at this venue. The first was Virender Sehwag, who scored 319 against South Africa in 2008, also at Chepauk. This stadium’s legacy is filled with historic moments and outstanding performances, making it a true cricketing landmark.

The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh (MYS) International Cricket Stadium, also known as the New Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, is a premier cricket venue in Mullanpur, Mohali, Punjab.

New PCA Stadium History

The stadium includes two international-standard dressing rooms equipped with steam, sauna, and ice bath facilities, along with a fully equipped gymnasium. Additionally, it features a modern media center, luxurious lounges, and efficient turnstiles.

HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala

Competing with world-renowned stadiums like the Adelaide Oval, South Africa’s Newlands, and New Zealand’s Queenstown Events Centre is no small feat. Yet, the picturesque Dharamsala Cricket Stadium stands proudly among the most beautiful cricket venues globally.

Built at an initial cost of ₹35 crore, this stunning ground is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the snow-capped Dhauladhar mountain range. Its scenic beauty is matched by its reputation as one of India’s finest cricket stadiums.

HPCA Stadium Dharamsala History

The stadium’s low-level stands offer spectators an unobstructed view of the game and the surrounding landscape. This design also benefits bowlers, providing wind assistance for seam bowling. As a result, captains often choose to field first to capitalize on the swinging conditions.

Dharamsala hosted its first match in 2005, a tour game between India Board President’s XI and Pakistan. However, its remote location poses a challenge for visitors, with the nearest airport in Chandigarh, 250 km away. Additionally, harsh winter conditions can lead to match cancellations due to snowfall and low temperatures.

Despite these challenges, the Dharamsala Cricket Stadium remains a jewel in the cricketing world, celebrated for its unparalleled beauty and excellent facilities.

The Assam Cricket Association Stadium, also known as Barsapara Cricket Stadium and officially named Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium, is a prominent cricket venue in Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam, India. The stadium can accommodate up to 55,000 spectators.
