Fastest Centuries in IPL: Top Players (2008 – 2024) Updated List
The IPL is one of the fastest cricket leagues, with only 20 overs per side. In this short format, batters have to score as fast as possible to help their teams win. It might seem like a tough challenge for a batter to reach 100 runs with so few balls. But believe it or not, a century has been scored in just 30 balls. Chris Gayle is the player who made this amazing record in IPL, leaving everyone stunned with his incredible performance.
Fastest Hundreds in IPL History
In the 2013 IPL season, Chris Gayle made history by scoring the fastest century ever in the Indian Premier League. Playing for RCB against Pune Warriors, he scored 100 runs in just 30 balls. Gayle’s explosive innings included 13 fours and 17 sixes, leading to a total of 175 runs off 66 balls.
This remarkable performance broke the previous fastest IPL century record set by Yusuf Pathan in 2010. Interestingly, Gayle is the only player to have scored two of the fastest centuries in IPL history. In the 2011 season, he smashed a century in just 46 balls against Kings XI Punjab.
Yusuf Pathan still holds the second-fastest century record, reaching 100 runs in just 37 balls while playing for Rajasthan Royals against Mumbai Indians.
Two other Indian players have also achieved fast centuries in IPL. Mayank Agarwal scored 100 off 45 balls for Kings XI Punjab, and Murali Vijay reached 100 off 46 balls for Chennai Super Kings.
Chris Gayle – 175(66) Vs Pune Warriors India in IPL 2013
On April 23, 2013, at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) put on a batting show against Pune Warriors India (PWI). Leading the charge was none other than Chris Gayle, also known as the “Universe Boss.” RCB, batting first, posted a huge total of 263 runs, losing just 5 wickets. At that time, it was the highest score ever in IPL history.
Chris Gayle was unstoppable that day, scoring more than half of RCB’s total. He reached his century in just 30 balls, but he didn’t stop there. Gayle went on to score a staggering 175 runs off 66 balls, including 13 fours and 17 sixes.
In response, Pune Warriors India struggled to chase down the massive target. They could only manage 133 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, losing the match by a big margin of 130 runs. It was a game dominated by Gayle’s unforgettable performance.
Yusuf Pathan – 101(37) Vs Mumbai Indians in IPL 2010
Former Rajasthan Royals (RR) all-rounder Yusuf Pathan once held the record for the fastest century in IPL, until Chris Gayle broke it in 2013. On March 13, 2010, during a match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Brabourne Stadium, RR faced a tough challenge chasing a huge target of 213 runs. Things looked grim as RR lost 3 wickets for just 40 runs in 6.3 overs.
Yusuf Pathan then stepped up and gave RR a fighting chance with his explosive batting. He hit 100 runs off just 37 balls, smashing nine fours and eight sixes. His aggressive partnership of 107 runs with Paras Dogra for the fifth wicket kept RR in the game.
Unfortunately, Pathan was run out in the 18th over, ending his incredible innings. Despite his heroic effort, RR fell just 4 runs short of MI’s total. Though the team lost, Pathan’s record-breaking knock remains a memorable moment in IPL history.
