Fastest 50s in IPL History

The Indian Premier League is one of the biggest stages in T20 cricket and has changed how the game is played, both locally and globally. Since its start in 2008, the IPL has given us some amazing moments, including a few that set new records. One of these records is about power hitting, where players score quickly and change the course of the game.

In this article, we will look at the top ten fastest fifties in IPL history. In the T20 format, batters often get the chance to play aggressively, and sometimes, they reach their half-centuries (50 runs) in no time.

Fastest Fifty in IPL History: Yashasvi Jaiswal – 13 Balls

Indian cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal holds the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history. He reached his fifty in just 13 balls during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2023 season at Eden Gardens. Jaiswal was playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR), who were chasing a target of 150 runs.

He played an amazing knock, scoring 98 runs from 47 balls, hitting 12 fours and five sixes. RR easily won the match, reaching 151/1 in just 13.1 overs, and Jaiswal was named the Player of the Match. Even though he missed out on a century, Jaiswal’s blistering 13-ball fifty set a new record in IPL history for the fastest half-century.

KL Rahul – 14 Balls

KL Rahul is known as one of the best batters in the IPL, and his records prove it. He holds the record for the second-fastest fifty in IPL history. This incredible performance happened during a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in the 2018 season, played in Mohali.

Delhi, led by Gautam Gambhir, scored 166/7 in the first innings. While chasing, Rahul gave Punjab a flying start by hitting a fifty in just 14 balls. He went on to score 51 runs from 16 balls, smashing six fours and four sixes. Punjab Kings reached the target, scoring 167/4 in 18.5 overs, winning the game by six wickets.

Pat Cummins – 14 Balls

Pat Cummins is known as one of the best bowlers in the world, but he has also shown his batting skills. In the 2022 IPL season, Cummins made the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history. This happened in a match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at DY Patil Stadium.

MI scored 161/4 in their first innings. When KKR was chasing, Cummins came in to bat at number 7, at a time when many of his teammates were out.

He smashed a fifty in just 14 balls and ended up scoring 56 runs from 15 balls, hitting four fours and six sixes. Thanks to his brilliant innings, KKR chased down the target, scoring 162/5 in just 16 overs to win the game.

Yusuf Pathan – 15 Balls

Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan holds the record for the second-fastest century and joint-third fastest fifty in IPL history. He hit a 15-ball fifty while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2014.

SRH scored 160/7 in their first innings. KKR was struggling at 78/4 when Pathan came in and changed the game. He played an incredible knock of 72 runs from just 22 balls, smashing five fours and seven sixes. Thanks to his powerful hitting, KKR won the match by 4 wickets.

Sunil Narine – 15 balls

Sunil Narine is known as one of the best bowlers in IPL history, but he has also played some great innings with the bat. One of his standout performances came in a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Eden Gardens in the 2017 season.

RCB scored 158/6 in their first innings. While chasing, Narine and Chris Lynn had a strong partnership, scoring 105 runs in just 6.1 overs.

Narine smashed a 15-ball fifty, ending his innings with 54 runs off 17 balls. Thanks to his explosive batting, KKR easily chased the target, finishing with 159/4 in 15.1 overs to win the match.

Nicholas Pooran – 15 Balls

Nicholas Pooran has played many powerful innings in the IPL, and his fastest fifty came in a thrilling match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2023.

This was the same game that sparked a heated moment between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir after Avesh Khan threw his helmet in celebration of the final run.

In that match, RCB put up a big score of 212/2, with their top three batters hitting half-centuries. Marcus Stoinis also played well, scoring 65 off 30 balls. But Pooran stole the show, smashing a 15-ball fifty and scoring 62 runs off 19 balls, hitting four fours and seven sixes.

His fiery batting helped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) chase down the target, scoring 213/9 to win a nail-biting game.

Jake Fraser McGurk – 15 Balls

Before hitting a 15-ball fifty against MI, Jake Fraser McGurk had already made a name for himself with another 15-ball fifty against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2024.

This was a high-scoring game, with SRH putting up a huge total of 266/7 in the first innings. Travis Head played brilliantly for SRH, scoring a fifty in just 16 balls during his 89-run knock off 32 balls.

While chasing, McGurk gave Delhi Capitals (DC) a strong start, smashing 65 runs off just 18 balls, including 5 fours and seven sixes.

However, after his dismissal, DC lost momentum and were all out for 199 runs, losing the match by 67 runs. Despite the loss, McGurk’s innings was a statement, announcing his arrival in the IPL.

Jake Fraser McGurk – 15 Balls

Australian star Jake Fraser McGurk made his IPL debut in 2024 for Delhi Capitals and quickly made an impact. He hit three half-centuries in the season, each coming in 19 balls or less. One of his standout performances was a 15-ball fifty against Mumbai Indians at Arun Jaitley Stadium in a record-breaking match.

Batting first, Delhi Capitals posted a huge total of 257/4, with McGurk smashing 84 runs off just 27 balls, hitting 11 fours and six sixes.

His 15-ball fifty became the joint-fastest fifty for DC in IPL history. Mumbai Indians put up a strong fight, scoring 247/9, but DC won the match by a close margin of 10 runs.

Suresh Raina – 16 Balls

Suresh Raina holds the record for the fastest fifty for Chennai Super Kings, scoring it off just 16 balls. This incredible feat happened in Qualifier 2 of the 2014 IPL season against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).

Raina played one of the most explosive innings in IPL history, scoring 87 runs from just 25 balls, hitting 12 fours and six sixes, with an amazing strike rate of 348.

Chennai Super Kings were chasing a target of 227 runs but fell short, finishing with 202 and losing the match by 24 runs. In that same game, Virender Sehwag hit a brilliant century, scoring 122 off 58 balls for Punjab.

Ishan Kishan – 16 Balls

In the IPL, five batters have scored fifties off just 16 balls, and Ishan Kishan was the second to achieve this. He did it during a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021, played in Abu Dhabi.

Ishan played an amazing innings, scoring 84 runs from 32 balls, hitting 11 fours and four sixes. Mumbai Indians (MI) had a great start, making 83 runs in the powerplay, with Ishan scoring 63 of them.

MI finished with a big total of 235/9 in their 20 overs. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) could only score 193/8, losing the match by 42 runs. This was the fastest fifty ever scored for MI in the IPL.
