Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is one of the most successful team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, they have won five IPL trophies and two Champions League titles. Their journey from the first IPL season in 2008 to now has been impressive. But in 2024, CSK couldn’t hold on to their title. With a new captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, they ended up in fifth place.
CSK has a history of making strong comebacks after a bad season. Fans are hopeful they will do the same in IPL 2025. But before that, a big auction is coming. All teams must release most of their players, keeping only about 4-5.

Here are four players Chennai Super Kings (CSK) might retained before the IPL 2025 auction.
Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad is almost certain to be the first player CSK will retain. He is a talented young player, and CSK has helped him grow into a strong cricketer. Even though his first season as captain wasn’t perfect, he performed very well as a batsman.
Gaikwad scored 583 runs with an average of 53 and a strike rate of 141.16. He also hit one century and four half-centuries. Since his debut in 2020, Gaikwad has been CSK’s best batter.
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja is another player CSK will likely keep. Although he has retired from international T20 cricket, he will continue playing in the IPL. Jadeja has been a key player for CSK, adding great balance to the team.
In the 2024 IPL, he took 8 wickets and scored 222 runs. His ability to bowl, bat, and field makes him a valuable all-rounder, something every IPL team wants.
Shivam Dube
Shivam Dube has flourished under CSK’s guidance. His time with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wasn’t as successful, but CSK has brought out the best in him.
He has become a strong player in Indian conditions, and if CSK releases him, it would be hard to get him back. He is still young and a game-changer, so the team is expected to keep him for the next season.
Matheesha Pathirana or MS Dhoni
The biggest question is whether MS Dhoni will play in IPL 2025. There is no clear answer yet. If Dhoni retires as a player, he may take on a mentoring role instead. In this case, Matheesha Pathirana could be the fourth player CSK retains.
Pathirana, a Sri Lankan fast bowler, has been more successful in the IPL than in international cricket. In just six matches in 2024, he took 13 wickets. This makes him a strong candidate for retention.
These four players could form the core of CSK’s team as they look to bounce back in IPL 2025.
